Since 1861, when the Italian Kingdom was newly born, the need of regulation of the maritime traffic resulted in the enactment of the Merchant Maritime Code on the 25th of June 1865.
The Increased maritime traffic of Civitavecchia Port persuaded the Ministry of the Merchant Marine to establish a Pilot Station in this maritime port of call. It was the Italian King, Vittorio Emanuele II, who set up in Civitavecchia Port a pilot station of 7 pilots, among which a Chief pilot, by the Royal Decree n. 345 of the 25th of June 1871.
Most of our Country history crossed Civitavecchia Port : the Great Powers fleets and the Papal found in it a place of refuge, confirming the choice the Emperor Traiano made more than 2.000 years ago, when he decided to build the Centumcellae Port.
